Joe Galuszka, a British-Polish composer based in Bristol, has unveiled a deeply emotive single titled “Requiem for Mum,” serving as a poignant precursor to his anticipated debut EP, “Fractures.” This singular piece is a tribute to Galuszka’s late mother, encapsulating themes of love, loss, and resilience while inviting listeners to engage with their personal experiences of grief.
Originally composed as a heartfelt elegy during his mother’s funeral, “Requiem for Mum” has since evolved into an expansive work recorded with The Bristol Ensemble, the region’s only professional orchestra. Known for their collaborations with esteemed organizations like the BBC and Aardman Animations, the ensemble adds a warm sensitivity to the recording, blending the intimacy of chamber music with the dynamic range of an orchestral performance.
The track opens with delicate musical textures, evocatively capturing the stillness that accompanies grief. As the composition progresses, it intertwines motifs that gradually build, guiding listeners through a transformative auditory journey from sorrow to moments of light and remembrance. Rather than providing closure, the piece emphasizes the persistent and transformative nature of memory. 
With mixing by Alex Garden (Tarran) and mastering by the celebrated Nick Cooke—whose impressive credits span a diverse range of notable artists—the single strikes a balance between cinematic artistry and raw emotional depth. The accompanying visuals, helmed by up-and-coming filmmaker Giles Pitman, further amplify the single’s introspective tone.
Reflecting on the creation of the single, Galuszka shares, “This piece was written at one of the most difficult moments of my life. It began as something deeply personal, but I’ve come to realise it belongs to anyone who has lost someone they love. It’s about holding on to memory and finding strength in it.”
