Skegss release new single “State of Hawaii,” blending bossa nova vibes with trumpet and Spanish vocals.
Australian garage-rock favourites Skegss return with their latest single “State of Hawaii”, the second track from their upcoming EP Top Heavy, due out June 27 via Loma Vista Recordings. Marking a notable sonic shift, the track layers breezy bossa nova rhythms with lush background vocals and standout trumpet lines, capturing the band’s spirit of experimentation.
Following the energetic “So Excited,” this new single offers a laid-back tribute to the islands, celebrating both the allure of Hawaii’s natural paradise and the escapist dream it represents. The release is accompanied by a tour-shot video directed and produced by Kale Neville, adding visual warmth to the breezy soundscape.
Lead vocalist Benny Reed explains the creative direction behind the song:
“We had a bit of fun with this song in the studio where we tried a few different versions and then thought it would be fun to go a little Latin or Cuban, a bit of a mix of things. We got some congas in there and trumpet for the first time, as well as some Spanish vocals.”
Fresh off a 20+ date headline tour across North America, the band is currently wrapping up their UK and Europe tour, including sold-out shows in Glasgow, London, and Paris. They’ll kick off their biggest Australian tour to date next month, spanning east to west coast and appearing as part of the 2025 VIVID program.
With momentum from last year’s Pacific Highway Music, and chart-topping success from Rehearsal, Skegss are continuing to evolve—blending introspection with carefree energy and genre-defying sounds.
