Sam Garrett Readies One Family, His Powerful Tribute to 60s Freedom Music

Sam Garrett is preparing to release his most ambitious project to date—One Family, a deeply emotive album that blends folk, reggae, and spiritual mantras into a profound call for unity. Slated for release this summer, the album draws heavily from the sound and ethos of the 1960s, a period Garrett views as musically and socially transformative.

“This album is my ode to the freedom movements of the 60s and the music expressed by the youth of that time,” says Garrett.

Garrett credits the work of artists such as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles as formative influences on this body of work. The album’s compositions explore the contrast between light and darkness, with Garrett offering up both tender encouragement and unflinching truth. The song “Hey Amma,” a standout collaboration with Jamaican artist Mortimer, contains one of the project’s most potent lyrics: “I am the coloniser’s son, the one who won’t obey, the dream that you once had has turned into decay.”

“Freedom is our nature and this album is a reflection of that,” he adds.

From the soul-lifting “Be Free” to the unifying title track “One Family,” Garrett’s music offers a message of compassion and interconnection. In an era defined by division, One Family arrives as a necessary and timely artistic statement—bridging generations with wisdom, warmth, and unwavering hope.
