Michal Gutman’s latest release, ‘War boys’, arrives as part of an ongoing singles project that emphasizes process, texture, and conceptual continuity. As a one woman band, Gutman commands her performances through bass guitar, a loop station, two microphones, and a touch pad synthesizer, shaping music in real time with precision and intensity.

Rather than following a traditional album rollout, Gutman’s project is designed to unfold gradually. ‘War boys’, the title track, is the second song to be released and became available in September 2025. Each release is treated as a standalone moment while contributing to the larger framework of the project.

The sound world Gutman creates is multifaceted. Her music blends harmony and disharmony, drawing from theatrical cabaret influences, club oriented rhythms reminiscent of the 80’s, and cinematic, dreamlike atmospheres. Through the use of polyrhythmics and contradicting loops, she stretches familiar forms into something slightly unexpected, inviting listeners into a space that feels both structured and fluid.

Thematically, the project continues Gutman’s exploration of identity during catastrophe. She examines the contrast and connection between personal grief and society’s grief, and how beauty can emerge within those experiences. These ideas are not presented directly, but are embedded in the sonic choices and evolving arrangements that define each track.

This phase of Gutman’s career follows the release of her first solo album, “Never Coming Home”, in 2024. It also reflects the depth of experience gained through a decade of touring and recording with her band, Whaling Snails, whose discography includes “Songs For Yael” from 2015 and “The Wind Around Your Heart” released in 2019.

With ‘War boys’, Gutman continues to build a body of work that values patience, experimentation, and emotional clarity. The singles project offers listeners an open invitation to engage with her music as it develops, one carefully crafted release at a time.
