Estonian composer Madis Muul presents Echoes of Layers, a genre-blending string quartet performed by the Muul Ensemble.
Estonian composer and pianist Madis Muul steps into a compelling new chapter of his creative path with the official release of String Quartet No. 1 “Echoes of Layers”, performed by the Muul Ensemble. Known for his innovative blend of European contemporary classical music and influences from South Indian Carnatic traditions, Muul crafts a unique listening experience that traverses sonic landscapes and inner emotion.
The inspiration behind Echoes of Layers stems from a reflective walk through the woods. Muul explains the piece as a progression from simplicity to complexity, mirroring nature’s unfolding intricacies. The work unfolds in three distinct movements:
- I. Horizon. Unfolding – A broad sonic canvas that gradually reveals layered subtleties.
- II. Growth. Time – Influenced by The Birth of a Flower (1910) by Percy Smith, this movement captures the fractal beauty of natural growth.
- III. Depths. Cells – Evoking the tampura’s resonance, this movement explores the spiritual and microscopic, reflecting the internal self.
Muul’s eclectic background — including studies in jazz piano at Siena Jazz University (Italy) and composition at ArtEZ University of the Arts (Netherlands) — contributes to the quartet’s cross-cultural depth. His collaborations with Indian percussionist Giridhar Udupa further shape the quartet’s musical DNA.
Accolades for Muul’s work continue to grow. He received the Estonian Theater Award (2022) for original music and was named second place at the International Songwriting Awards. His performances have reached international stages, with All About Jazz describing his music as “cosmic, tender, and deeply immersive.”
Looking ahead, Muul plans to debut String Quartet No. 2 in spring 2026, with both quartets set for a special vinyl edition release.
