Joanna Borrett’s debut Moments of Freedom features five expressive songs for mezzo-soprano and piano.
In an impressive debut, self-taught composer and cellist Joanna Borrett will unveil her first song cycle, Moments of Freedom, on 29 September 2025. The upcoming release introduces five emotionally rich compositions for mezzo-soprano and piano, each capturing a distinct chapter of life — from youthful awe to love, perseverance, and the enduring nature of human bonds.
The album was recorded at the Royal College of Music (RCM), spotlighting the compelling performances of mezzo-soprano Angelina Dorlin-Barlow and pianist Firoze Madon, a distinguished finalist in BBC’s Young Musician of the Year. Their collaboration, supported by Nick Sears, Head of Vocal Studies at RCM, highlights a cross-generational approach that blends emerging vocal and instrumental talent with the mature creative vision of Borrett.
Speaking on the project, Joanna shares, “Moments of Freedom is a cycle of five songs that represent different stages of life. Working with Angelina and Firoze was a joy — their insight and commitment added an extra element to the music and I was thrilled by their artistry.”
Borrett’s path into composition is unique. After stepping away from the professional music scene for over two decades, she returned with a renewed drive to create. Teaching herself to improvise, arrange, and compose, she broke through self-doubt and industry challenges, leading to a publishing deal with Kevin Mayhew Publishers.
Her compositions have since received national and royal recognition — aired on BBC Radio 3, featured on Magic Classical, and celebrated by Gramophone as Video of the Day. Notably, her works have also been performed by the Duchess of Edinburgh’s string orchestra during ceremonies at Holyrood Palace.
Borrett’s growing recognition in the classical music world was further cemented when three of her string works were added to the Trinity exam syllabus, placing her among the prominent voices in contemporary classical composition.
