Folk B*tch Trio release “Cathode Ray” from their debut album “Now Would Be A Good Time”, out July 25 via Jagjaguwar.
Melbourne/Naarm-based trio Folk B*tch Trio—Gracie Sinclair (she/her), Jeanie Pilkington (she/her), and Heide Peverelle (they/them)—announce their debut album Now Would Be A Good Time, due out July 25 via Jagjaguwar, alongside the release of their latest single and video, “Cathode Ray.”
The track opens with breathy, cautious harmonies and evolves into a wide-open chorus. Driven by a spacious beat, “Cathode Ray” speaks to visceral human anxieties and the desire to shed internal limitations.
“It expresses a feeling of being trapped in myself, and wanting to break out of that so violently that I’m literally talking about opening up a body viscerally,” says Sinclair. “It’s about frustration, and knowing there’s no cheap thrill that’s going to fix that.”
The single follows the acclaimed “The Actor,” praised by Beats Per Minute as “acidic and gorgeous” and named a “Song You Need to Know” by Rolling Stone.
Now Would Be A Good Time is grounded in gnarled Americana, classic rock, and intimate balladry, yet is thoroughly modern in its lyrical scope—touching on breakups, media fatigue, and twenty-something dissociation. Recorded to tape in Auckland with Tom Healy (Tiny Ruins, Marlon Williams), the album is minimal, intentional, and personal.
The trio’s creative bond was forged in high school, and as Sinclair notes, “The chemistry of being inspired by each other was evident from the get-go.”
Following a run of UK/EU and North American shows, Folk B*tch Trio will embark on a headline tour of Australia and New Zealand this September.
