Renowned UK drummer Garry ‘Magpie’ Bowler makes a compelling return with ‘The In Crowd’, a bold reinterpretation of the Billy Page song that doubles as a rallying call for originality and a tribute to Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister.
Initially crafted as a message of appreciation for supporters of original music, Bowler’s version evolved into a deeper artistic expression. With the upcoming 10-year anniversary of Lemmy’s passing in 2025, the track took on a new form — one rooted in respect, memory, and admiration.
The lineup behind ‘The In Crowd’ speaks volumes. Bowler leads with drums, arrangement, and reimagined lyrics. Alan Davey (ex-Hawkwind) anchors the track with bass, while Wayne Kramer of MC5 — a band Lemmy credited as a major influence — brings signature guitar work. Vocals come courtesy of Enid Williams, co-founder of Girlschool, whose connection to Motörhead adds another layer of depth.
In 1992, Bowler worked with Motörhead during the formative phase of March Or Die, recording with Phil Campbell and Würzel. That history informs every note of ‘The In Crowd’. Wayne Kramer, after hearing only the rhythm section, agreed to contribute guitar, and his powerful playing became one of his final studio sessions. His feedback was emphatic: “The track ROCKS!”
The process of building the song — beginning with Bowler’s solo drums — gave each musician space to inject their voice. The result is a piece that’s both unified and deeply personal. Bowler’s lyrical changes shift the song’s meaning toward a wider dedication: to all who support and create original music, and to the enduring influence of those like Lemmy who made it possible.
