Chappell Roan unveils “The Subway”, her emotional new single alongside a cinematic New York-based video.
Global pop artist Chappell Roan has released “The Subway”, the official studio version of a song that has become a fan-favorite since she began performing it live last year. The track is now out through Amusement, Island Records, and Universal Music Canada.
Produced and co-written with Daniel Nigro, the track captures the subtle devastation of heartbreak—one that hides in daily routines and city streets. A standout line encapsulates the raw emotion: “I made a promise, if in four months this feeling ain’t gone, well f*ck this city, I’m moving to Saskatchewan!”
As anticipation grew, hints began to appear across New York City—murals, posters, and red imagery sparked conversation online. A viral video showing a moving truck in Saskatchewan added to the speculation that “The Subway” was on the way.
To mark the release, Roan offered a special edition copper metallic 7” vinyl, which includes “The Subway” on Side A and the demo “I Hate It Here” on Side B. The limited pressing sold out quickly after launch.
The release is paired with an ambitious music video directed by Amber Grace Johnson, filmed entirely on 35mm in New York. The video serves as a love letter to the city and captures Roan moving through subway stations, haunted by emotion and memory, yet unmistakably herself.
“The cliche of ‘the girl that got away’ barely scratches the surface for me with this song. I wrote it as I was stumbling around New York with a broken heart and I kept envisioning us on every street, fire escape, coffee shop, park and yes… the subway.”
In addition, Roan has announced multiple U.S. tour dates this fall, including four shows at Forest Hills Stadium in New York, two nights in Kansas City, and two shows in Pasadena, CA. A portion of all ticket sales will support organizations for trans youth.
