Emily James explores emotional volatility with “Underdog” from her upcoming EP “Summer Nostalgia”

Singer-songwriter Emily James has unveiled “Underdog,” the latest single from her upcoming EP Summer Nostalgia. With layered rock influences and emotionally raw lyrics, the track captures a pivotal moment in the project’s story arc.

“I see it as a tumultuous high school relationship where immaturity and incompatibility are bubbling up,” Emily says. “This is the turning point of Summer Nostalgia.”

The single’s cathartic energy is matched by an equally powerful video, which premiered alongside the release. “Underdog” builds on the introspective narratives presented in her earlier singles “Under the Influence” and “Suburbia,” continuing James’ exploration of adolescence and young love.

The lyrics, paired with punchy guitar lines and urgent drums, give “Underdog” a climactic sense of release. The line, “I’m holding on to what could be, but would it be better?” reveals the inner turmoil at the heart of many youthful relationships.

In addition to the new music, Emily is preparing for a string of performances with Donovan Woods on his West Coast tour, which kicks off June 19 and includes shows in Denver, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and LA’s iconic Troubadour.
